Effect of undercooling on particle size distribution in phase separated Cu75Co25-xMx (M = Ni, Fe) alloys with low M content
The microstructure and Co-rich particle size distribution (PSD) in phase separated Cu75Co25-xMx (M = Ni, Fe) alloys with various undercoolings have been investigated. The Ni addition suppresses and the Fe addition promotes the phase separation behavior in undercooled Cu-Co alloys. With increasing undercooling, the PSD changes from a bimodal to multimodal size distribution, the first peak position shifts to a larger radius gradually and its full width of half maximum becomes wider, which illustrates the undercooling has an important effect on diffusive growth of the Co-rich particles. Small amount of Ni/Fe elemental addition has a similar effect on PSD to that of alter undercooling in phase separated Cu-Co alloy.
