Prestraining induced enhancement in the fatigue limit obtained by load increasing thermal method for metastable austenitic stainless steel
In the present work, the authors evaluate the fatigue limit of as received 1.4301 (18–10) austenitic stainless steel and its variation due to uniaxial prestraining. A short time load increasing thermal method is adopted to overcome the problems (time consuming and high material cost) involved in conventional S–N curve derivation, particularly in case of high cycle fatigue. Different extent of tensile prestrain imparts different magnitude of pre‐existing martensite to specimens before the start of fatigue test. It is observed that increased amplitude of fatigue limit is proportional to the amount of prestrain. The applicability of the employed fast technique is demonstrated by validating the obtained fatigue limit against classical constant stress amplitude test results for each amount of prestrain.
